VOF de Kunst was a Dutch pop group from Tilburg, who scored a European hit with their "Suzanne" (Susanna) in 1983 and 1984, which peaked at number 12 in the United Kingdom, achieving significant success in many other countries, as well. The band's lead singer was Nol Havens. They have also toured under the international name The Art Company.[1]
In later days they produced albums of Sinterklaas-songs which are very popular in the Netherlands and Flanders.
Biography
VOF Art was founded in 1983. That year, the band spent 4 weeks at number 1 in the Dutch charts with "Suzanne." The english version of the song 'Susanna' was an international hit and as The Art Company for months in almost all European countries. "Susanna" sold three million copies worldwide. A few years later, this thin little success again repeated with a cup of coffee. "
What initially started as a one off tribute to the beautiful Art work of Annie M. G. Schmidt, led to a series of very successful CDs for children. Unique interpretations of nursery rhymes were recorded by the band with a contemporary feel. CDs include "Dikkertje Dap (triple platinum) and" The Lapjeskat". VOF de Kunst played in the dutch version of Sesame Street which was followed by the album "Songs from Sesame Street."
Especially for St Nicholas Day, the CD "Sinterklaas met VOF de Kunst ", with traditional dutch festive songs, but also original songs, written by Ivo de Wijs, Erik van Muiswinkel and Theuns de Winter. They sold more than 1 million copies.
Since 1996 VOF de Kunst plays theatre productions. Their first show 'Dag Giraf' allowed children to interact, play and sing along with the songs of VOF de Kunst. The songs are sung and accompanied by Vof de Kunst, and includes contributions by comedian and writer Erik van Muiswinkel. The success of 'Dag Giraf'was followed by the productions'Ik ben lekker stout,' 'Vanaf Hier nog vijf Kwartier', 'Apekooien' and 'Animals'. During the St Nicholas season they perform Sinterklaas themed concerts.
In recent years, VOF de Kunst publishes their interpretations of children's Books under the Luistervink label. [2]
The latest CD is called VOF de Kunst 'Musiek op Schoot', traditional dutch songs and nursery rhymes with duets with Carice van Houten and Guus Meeuwis.
