The Centre for Population, Poverty and Public Policy Studies (CEPS/INSTEAD) is a multi-disciplinary and multi-national research centre located in Luxembourg. The Centre was initially created for comparative, cross-national research on persistent poverty in industrialized countries, within the framework of the First European Community Program to Combat Poverty. In consequence of the steady development and extension of its national and international research activities, the Centre was given by Luxembourg law the status of a public establishment by the Prime Minister in 1989, with scientific, administrative and financial autonomy.

Mission

The Centre main research activities are: to conduct cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of populations, poverty and socio-economic policy; to create and manage data bases with national and international comparative scientific data; to develop instruments of analysis, modeling and simulation for socio-economic policy; to develop and improve data-processing tools; to create and maintain inter-regional and international research and information networks; to organize post-graduate training.

Research

The Centre is composed of five research units: The Department of Population and Employment, the Department of Economics, the Department of Geography (GEODE) and the Department of International Development (ERDI).

International Master in Social Policy Analysis (IMPALLA). With the political and financial support of the Luxembourg Prime Minister and the Minister of Culture, Higher Education and Research a CEPS/INSTEAD related University Consortium was formed in order to create a Graduate School for Comparative Public Policy Analysis and Data. The University Consortium and to guarantee the academic standards of the programme, CEPS/INSTEAD has made a joint venture agreement with the Department of Sociology of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven as key partner and offers an International Master in Social Policy Analysis (IMPALLA).

Integrated Research Infrastructure in Social Sciences at CEPS/INSTEAD (IRISS). IRISS is a visitor's programme at CEPS/INSTEAD. Its mission is to organise short visits of researchers willing to undertake empirical research in economics and other social sciences using the archive of micro-data available at the Centre.

Size

The Centre has 111 research staff. Researchers are recruited from many European or North American universities. They include economists, sociologists, social policy analysts, geographers and psychologists. The working languages of the Centre are English and French.
