Jagdschloss Gelbensande

A Jagdschloss is palace or a castle in a zoo or a hunting zone such as a forest, field or lake and served primarily as the accommodations of ruler, and the court, on the occasion of the hunt in the region.

Jagdschloss's were mostly used for banquets or gatherings before the hunt. They sometimes also served for non-hunt related parties and similar arrangements. The Jagdschloss is often equated with the Lustschloss, particularly as the hunt was also a recreational activity. However, Lustschloss and Jagdschloss differ in the function as well as in the architecture. Lustschloss are free in their decoration, while Jagdschloss have always had a relation to the hunt: this can be manifested by antlers and other trophies, by hunting paintings, and also by deliberate showing of wood or natural materials; Jagdschloss can be equipped, for the rest, absolutely preciously. In contrast to Lustschloss timber-framed buildings or log cabins were no rarity, nevertheless, have kept only few luxurious constructions from stone which determine today the understanding of the Jagdschloss.

Stables and other constructions usually belonged to the Jagdschloss. It also served as the accommodations of hunting equipment, coaches and suite. Larger Jagdschloss often form self-sufficient ensembles, while smaller arrangements, which are called lodges, are often established in castle parks and gardens. Most Jagdschloss are in reach of the residence of the respective prince/family.
