Mpho

MPHO (pronounced Mmm-poh)[1] is the stage name of Mpho Skeef.

Mpho – her name is a SeSotho word meaning "gift"[1] – was born in South Africa to a Zulu father, Eugene Skeef, and a white South African mother. She spent her first birthday in jail.[2] She moved to the UK at the age of 4 and was brought up in Stockwell, Clapham and Brixton.

In over a decade of singing and songwriting she has performed with Bugz in the Attic singing the lead on their hit "Booty La La". She also sang on the track "This Island Earth" on the Coldcut album Sound Mirrors.

In her latest single "Box N Locks" she is the first person to be given permission from the Canadian group Martha and the Muffins to use samples from "Echo Beach", somewhat of a rare occurance considering the ease of obtaining permission for the use of samples in the music industry today.[2]

She has signed a five-album deal with EMI/Parlophone.[3]
