Hickey College: St. Louis

Hickey College is a small, private career college located in St. Louis, Missouri. It originally was founded in 1933 by Dr. Margaret Hickey, it now has campuses in Westport Plaza and on Lindbergh Boulevard near the airport. It has nearby housing for students but over half of students come from the St. Louis area.

Hickey College awards diplomas, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees. It states that it focuses on job placement for graduates and that financial aid is available for those who qualify. Its web site contains limited information but may be found at http://www.hickeycollege.edu.


[Student Body, Admissions, and Outcomes] According to Peterson’s (http://www.petersons.com) and recent institutional publications, Hickey College has an undergraduate population of 445. Of 797 applicants, 588 (or 74%) were admitted. For the relevant recent year, 80% of entering students graduated and 98% of all graduates were placed in jobs.

Academics

Hickey College provides career-focused courses to high school graduates. Hickey College’s programs generally offer hands-on learning opportunities that help prepare graduates to start working immediately. Some programs offer externships as well. Students can graduate in 8-12 months by earning a diploma. Associate degree programs can be completed in 14-20 months. Upperclassmen pursuing bachelor’s degrees generally work during the day and take evening classes. Hickey College divides its eleven major areas of study into four main categories: Business, Technology, Health Care, and Culinary/Design. These major areas are listed below.

Hickey College’s newest offerings are the veterinary technician program (http:www.vettechinstitute.com) and the culinary arts program (http://www.CI-STL.com). Both programs feature brand new facilities designed for each program.

Accreditation

Hickey College is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (http://www.acics.org) to award diplomas, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees. The Veterinary Technician program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA, http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/about_cvtea.asp).
