Taiwan Focus

Taiwan Focus is a student group registered under the School of International Affairs(SIPA) at Columbia University in the City of New York. Taiwan Focus is a sub-student group under SIPA Student Association(SIPASA), and the Weatehrhead East Asia Institute of Columbia University. It was founded in 2006 by a group of Taiwanese students at Columbia University, who felt that a student group that aims specifically to promoted Taiwan related issues should be established in Columbia Community. Therefore, the initiative was created in the fall of 2006.
Functions
According to SIPASA website, Taiwan Focus's objective is to "foster understanding and awareness of the island country, and to encourage dialogue and research on Taiwan-related issues in the Columbia University community." Taiwan Focus also serves as a platform to provide resources for those who are interested in studying and/or traveling in Taiwan.
Events
Taiwan Focus has organized and promoted events including movie nights, brown bag talks, cultural events, and art exhibitions both on- and off-campus, on a variety of topics including Taiwanese society, culture, politics, economy, and history. The past events of Taiwan Focus are as follows:
Spring, 2009
• Taipei Night— documentary of Taipei City and Taipei 101
• Movie night
• Cross-strait Panel with GCI— first-ever academic panel on relations between Taiwan, China and the US in SIPA. Our panelists included the scholars from Columbia University, CSIS and Brookings Institute
Fall, 2008

• Taste of Asia
• Career Panel focusing job opportunities in Taiwan and Greater China area

• Art Exhibition—Enchanting Taiwan Photo Exhibition at SIPA’s 4th floor on Taiwan's natural beauty and cultural splendor
