MEET THE STANS: UZBEKISTAN - Simon at the Registan in Samarkand, the finest built space in the Islamic world. Uzbekistan is the most repressive of the 'Stans' countries, and is run like a feudal system by Islam Karimov, the president since independence. Meet the Stans is a four-part BBC TV series, shown on BBC2, BBC World and by broadcasters internationally, in which Simon Reeve travelled from the far north-west of Kazakhstan, by the Russian border, east to the Chinese border, south through Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to the edge of Afghanistan, and west to Uzbekistan and the legendary Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara.

Meet the Stans was a 2003 travel documentary, part of the Holidays in the Danger Zone series produced by the BBC. The series was set in Khazakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It was broadcast from 3–6 November 2003, at 23:20 GMT on BBC Two.[1]
