Lily Masson
Lily Masson (b. 1920) is a French painter and the daughter of André Masson. Her grandfather was Joseph Cabale (d. 1917) who worked with Tomas Bata, a Czech shoe manufacturer. Her mother, whose family had a shop in Ceret, Pyrenees-Orientales, France, met the young artist Andre Masson and they married shortly before leaving Ceret in the spring of 1920.
Lily met many famous artists of the avant-garde movement in the 1920s in her father's atelier at 45 rue de la Blomet, Paris, including Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, Paul Eluard, Man Ray and Max Jacob. But it wasn't until she met Greek painter Aristomenis Angelopoulos in 1960 in Zagreb, where her mother was living, that she took up painting herself.
From September to October 2009 an exhibition of her paintings was staged in Ceret, the home town of her mother, Odette Cabale. Lily, aged 89, was guest of honour at the vernissage.
