Peri-urbanisation relates to the phenomenon of urban sprawl. The expression originates from the french word "périurbanisation". It is used to describe the urbanisation on the urban fringe. Whilst the word suburb describes an area often developed next to some kind of public transport line, a peri-urban area tend to have a higher concentration of individual houses and being less served by public transport.
