Linguists worldwide regard Hindi, Urdu, Magahi, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Awadhi, etc, as various dialects of a language continuum called Hindustani. Indo-Fijians were/are overwhelmingly non-Muslims and were imported to Fiji in 1879 and onwards from regions where Bhojpuri and Awadhi was widely spoken. Scholars have recently reaffirmed that the vernacular of Indo-Fijians are based on Bhojpuri and Awadhi. Contrary to what the original article would have you believe, Info-Fijians do not call their language "Fiji Urdu" or even Urdu. Standard Urdu and Hindi is certainly taught in schools, but is not used in everyday lives. The original article also incorrectly identifies Indo-Fijians as descending from Pakistanis and Indians. Pakistan was not formed by Indian Muslims until decades after Indians were brought to Fiji, so its logically incorrect to even mention Pakistan.
