Linear motifs are sequence patterns that capture key features responsible for a protein function localized in a short peptide stretch, usually 3-10 residues in length.

As sequence motifs, they are similar to [[[protein domains]] but are different in certain fundamental ways. Being so short, they are not normally detectable by sequence similarity search tools, such as BLAST, which makes them more difficult to discover.
