Utah Transit Authority Police Department

The UTA transit district has its own police force, which is responsible for law enforcement and safety through out the light rail, bus and commuter rail systems. The force was originally created as a security force, and the officers were tasked with conducting fare enforcement.

In 2006, the Utah State Legislature passed a bill, which granted the UTA transit police officers full state certification as law enforcement officers, with the same law enforcement authority as any municipal, county, or state police officer. [1], The UTA transit police officers are certified as police officers by the Utah Department of Public Safety P.O.S.T., and they receive the same training and they are required to attend the same police academies as their municipal, county, and state counterparts. [1]UTA transit police officers must receive 40 hours of continuous in service training annually, which usually includes medical and first responder training, firearms and weapons training, defensive tactics and legal training.

Like every municipal, county and state police agency, the UTA transit police have a general jurisdiction which is UTA property, which include train stations and bus stops and UTA administration and service centers and UTA vehicles. UTA transit police officers have the legal authority as law enforcement officers to enforce all state and federal laws outside of their jurisdiction which includes traffic laws.[2]

The UTA Police Department has 35 sworn personnel and 20 non-sworn support personnel. The UTA transit police officers are routinely patrolling train stations, trains and buses and conducting fare enforcement. Transit police officers also respond to calls for police services through out the transit system, such as vehicle thefts and burglaries, assaults, disorderly conduct and traffic accidents.

The UTA Police Department's main headquarters is at the Central Pointe TRAX Station. There are several small police sub-stations throughout the transit system. The UTA Police Dispatch Center can be contacted by dialing 801-287-EYES (3937) or 911 [2].
