A man cave (also sometimes mantuary[1]) is a male sanctuary,[2] such as a specially equipped garage,[3] spare bedroom,[2] media room,[4] den,[5] or basement.[5][6]

Design

Man caves can be equipped with accessories such as refrigerators,[3][7] vending machines,[4][7] putting greens,[2] giant TVs,[2] musical instruments,[6] pool tables,[8] and entertainment centers.[8] A man cave may also be fitted out with a bar and sports memorabilia.[9] Upscale sports-themed furnishings are also available to outfit a man cave.[4] These rooms are also often decorated by the male, with little-to-no female influence.[10]

Purpose

A man cave is loosely a male-only space to retreat to,[11] watch sports matches,[9] or play video games.[5] According to psychiatrist and author Scott Haltzman, it is important for a man to have a place to call his own, referring to a male area to retreat to.[8] Some psychologists claim that a man cave can provide refuge from stressful surroundings and be beneficial to marriage.[1]
