Lakeside Mall is a shopping mall located on the northeastern border of Sterling Heights, Michigan, a suburb in the Metro Detroit area. It is located south of Hall Road (M-59) between Hayes and Schoenherr. Since it was opened in the 1970s, it has been the most popular shopping destination in Macomb County.

History

Lakeside Mall started as a joint-venture between A. Alfred Taubman, and the Dutch investment company Rodamco. It was built and opened in 1976, just as northward suburban development was booming. In the last decade, Lakeside Mall, as well as it's sister mall, Twelve Oaks Mall, were sold to other investment companies. Currently, Lakeside Mall is owned by the real estate investment company, General Growth Properties (GGP).

Stores

In 1976, Lakeside Mall opened with four department store anchors: Hudson's (2 Locations), Crowley's, Sears, and JC Penney. In the mid 1990s, Crowley's went out of business and made way for Lord & Taylor. In 2001, the Target Corporation changed all Hudson's stores to Marshall Field's. The Marshall Field's stores will become Macy's in 2006. With over 180 stores, it remained Metro Detroit's largest shopping mall until 1998, when Great Lakes Crossing opened.

Lakeside Mall features stores to cater to any budget, from the bargain-bottom Steve & Barrys, to the upscale leather store Coach Inc. In 1998, Lifestyles Cafe opened a brand-new, large, 2-story food court that housed many fast-food restaurants. Lifestyles Cafe featured several dining settings; everything from an upscale restaurant, to a small cafe. Lifestyles Cafe later became the Lakeside Mall Food Court, which is now home to a large, indoor carousel.
