I must again take absence from Wikipedia. Unfortunately real life issues are leaving me with very little time to contribute here seriously even though most of my studies are now complete. Once things become a little bit less hectic I will come back. Can't give a date sadly. Kind regards and happy editing.Calaka (talk) 14:05, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

TO NEW INDIVIDUALS CONTRIBUTING TO WIKIPEDIA PLEASE READ THIS FIRST. ONCE YOU READ IT YOU MAY THEN COMMENT/WRITE ON MY PAGE:
I will tag your articles in order to help you improve the articles. It is easy to ignore you and just put a CSD (speedy deletion tag --> i.e. within a few minutes) on new Wikipedia articles lacking the minimum requirements but I feel you need a chance. A chance that the wiki tags can help you with. They will tell you quickly how your article on Wikipedia needs to stay in order to prevent it from getting deleted. In very very simple terms an article will stay on Wikipedia that is notable and contains references to back the notability up. Please read the links of the tags that I place on the page and follow their guidelines. Doing so will lead to both increasing your knowledge so you wont make the same mistake again (making everyone happy!) and increasing the quality of Wikipedia articles at the very beginning of their creation rather than leaving them to languish as articles that would make readers of Wikipedia unhappy &/or give them something to complain about. So then here are some questions you might have. Feel free to add them below and I will answer them and hopefully this will help others in the future.
HOW DO I ADD PHOTOS/IMAGES/PICTURES TO MY NEW ARTICLE!?
Your best bet for how to add pictures would be to have a look first at this: Help:Images_and_other_uploaded_files which will then lead you to have a look at both uploading a pic: Wikipedia:Uploading_images and then playing around with it on the article can be achieved by looking at this: WP:PIC. It might seem a bit overwhelming at first, but WP:BOLD and you should get the hang of it.
Why was my article tagged with (There are more than this but I will add them as I use them more often. Please click on the links and read the pages thoroughly to get an understanding. It is not rocket science):
{{wikify}}

-Because it needs to be wikified in accordance with basic Wikipedia guidelines.

{{unref}}

-Because every single article on Wikipedia needs a reference. No exceptions. Would you hand in an essay/assignment/report in university without providing a reference? Would you believe someone who told you that they caught a shark if you can't see it/there is no photo/video evidence?

{{uncat}}

-Because every single article on Wikipedia needs to be in a category. A project this big needs a minimum level of organization.

{{nofootnotes}}

-An article that has references can be further improved by placing footnotes in order to improve the quality of the article. While it is not compulsory it ensures the notability of your article is validated a lot quicker.

{{Notability}}

-Notability needs to be established by providing a reference that proves this. There are many instances when an item is not considered notable. Please see WP:NOT for a detailed listing. Here is an analogy: There are ~6.6 billion people in the world. Does every single person need an article?

Are these tags a bad thing?
NOT AT ALL! In fact it means I care. Some might consider it mean but trust me that is not the intention. My personal belief is that if you will learn from your first mistake and not make it again and I will not need to place the tags on your subsequent articles since you will do the bare minimum for an article.
Why did you tag my page so quickly. I just made it 2 seconds ago?
Observation shows me (other Wikipedians please feel free to vouch for me here) that the sooner I place the tags up the sooner an individual will address them. If I was to place a tag on an article that was made in 2006 I have a good feeling the original individual (who could well have disappeared a while ago and probably will never come back) will not actually bother to take a look. They will have moved on from Wikipedia and probably would have forgotten they ever made such an article.
But I was going to add references and a category and words and so on. Why must you rush me?
I am not taking that chance. You can either learn to edit all in one go and have the ref/cat/wikify issues taken all under control or you can expect me to tag the page and then you can address them when you choose. Once you address the issue, you are more than welcome to remove them.
My reference is not in English.
Doesn't matter! In the majority of cases we will be able to work out whether the reference is indeed truthful or not. ;)
My reference can not be found on the Web.
I personally do not have a problem with this as I try to apply good faith. However, many other Wikipedians would disagree with this and say (basically) if it is notable enough to be written in numerous books and essays etc. not currently present online it probably has to have some online coverage to establish its notability as well.
My article doesn't need a reference. Why won't you believe me? This animal/city/person/item/thing is real?
Would you believe me if I told you I was the richest man in the world? No you would want a reference to back it up. You would want to read on a newspaper saying "John Smith" AKA Calaka has now been confirmed as the richest man in the world.
If you are such an expert on Wikipedia, why don't you improve all the articles yourself instead of tagging the articles?
Well this can be broken down:
1).Wikipedia receives at least 1,000 new articles a day (excluding the ones that get deleted throughout the day). Let's just say 750 are awesome, 250 of them are utter crap (no wikification, cat or ref) but do not get speedy deleted. 250 articles is a hell of a lot of work to both add wikification, categories and most prominent of all add references to each and every single one to satisfy the notability criteria. I simply do not have the time to go through so many (believe it or not I have a life outside of Wikipedia).
2). Tagging through 250 articles however is a very fast process. We use special programs that basically gives us the ability to tag a page in 5 seconds and then move on to the next article.
3). Instead of one poor sod having to go through fixing up the 250 articles, the tagging allows each of the creators of those articles a chance to fix them up themselves. They hence learn from their mistakes and improve the quality of the article (as I said initially).
4). I would not have the same passion/excitement on the article as much as the original contributor of the article. So while you might really be fascinated about Scheibe Tandem-Falke I would not be and hence there would be no incentive for me to work on it.
Note: I am sure many Wikipedians might agree that the 750/250 variables I gave above should be inverted but it is not relevant for this question. ;)
Note2: If you do the maths, that means in 1,000 days Wikipedia will have 4 million articles. Really cool if I say so myself hehe.

I was surprised not to find any article on wikipedia. I am not experienced in wikipedia , and now i found a message it could be deleted in a week. So i added references on the page. I write you because i need some help. May be you can make the page complete and good so it will not be deleted. The adress is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22radio_rainbow_international%22

Thank you!!

Thanks

For bring that issue to the New contributors' help page. I posted an option - Wikipedia:Article Incubator to the user. I'm not posting that link to the help page, as the project itself is just underway, and I don't want to overwhelm them before they get their act together. (Ironically, the project itself is fighting a deletion request.)--SPhilbrickT 12:57, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome

Dear Calaka-

Thanks for your warm welcome to Wikipedia. So far, I love the place and the cookies were a nice touch :)

When you suggested that I sign my messages, was it because I didn't sign my last one? I thought I had. I included four tildes and the preview copy had my name and signature in it... Anyhow, I hope you or someone will review my entry because I can't wait to see it collaborated on (or no longer say it has yet to be reviewed). I tried to do as much Wikipedia research before posting to make sure I edited and stylized correctly. There's a lot to review so I can only assume I did some things wrong. Pointers would be most valuable.

Thanks again for your welcome and help.

DKY

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

I've done a bit of reading on DYK but can't figure out where to put the following code. I'm also not 100% sure the code is correct. Any help would be appreciated.

George Brumder

The building that housed his publishing empire, once the largest office building in Milwaukee

  • ... that George Brumder once owned the largest German-language newspaper company in the U.S. and owned the Boston Red Sox for a time?

Radio Rainbow International

Hi Calaka. I see articles about the BBC, radio Caroline , radio london , radio Veronoca, offshore radiostations, etc etc. It is Radio rainbow the voice of peace, well known around the globe , i added listeners reports from around the world, news on independant radiosites , and you can listen direct yourself via lots of links , so what can i do more, this article should just be in wikipedia because its a big movement and i listen a lot myself. But i am sure you agree and this article will stay. feel free to make it better with photo's from the sites etc. you are so experienced!

Thanks for your good work on this unique great free media!!

Regards;

Nico.

Can we now remove the notability query? Michael Fourman (talk) 09:40, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome

Good morning, Calaka:

Thanks for the welcome. It is odd that, even though I have been editing Wikipedia articles for several years (off and on, with several different sign-ons, which I tend to forget), I have never created a new article. I've wanted to, but have never been able to summon the wherewithall to do so. I was a proofreader for many years so most of my contributions thus far have been in grammar, spelling, and cleaning up awkward sentence structure. I also have done a little translation work (I'm still a relatively fluent French reader, though I no longer speak the language well enough to even have a decent conversation).

Thanks again,

Hi Calaka. As you can see someone deleted the page. I do not understand why. I and others i think, have done everything and i think its important the article is in Wikipedia. I am asking you to help me. You have got expertise here. Please ask why that person have deleted the page and restore it.

Thank you !!

Moving pages

Hello, someone moved 3 pages of the singles pages that I've created to another pages, for example, Mia (Paulina Rubio Song) from her album Pau-Latina is now redirected to Pau-Latina album. My question is: Are the original pages (that have been moved) now lost? Can you fix this "problem"? Uvero (talk) 22:14, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Moving pages

Well I tried to do my best to get some references, I have already said that those singles are old and, to me, it's sort of hard to find information on their charts or something like that. Uvero (talk) 15:42, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thank you! Uvero (talk) 15:27, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted article

Hi Calaka,

I noticed a page I started has been deleted for reasons of copyright violation. Unfortunately I cannot access the page anymore to see to which part this accusation is refering to. Anyhow, I am not planning to put the page back on wikipedia, because I cannot find enough notable written references, but I'd like to save the contents for myself. Are you capable of recovering the deleted page with the title 'Poekoelan' written by myself? If you can, please forward it to me.

Thanks in advance and best of luck with your exams.

Hi Calaka, I ran into a problem with the article you wrote on the tubercle of the femur. I was wondering if you could check out the discussion page and tell me what you thought? Thanks Bobsagat (talk) 20:19, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question Concerning Copyright Laws

Hello Calaka. PBS sent me a message, warning me that a section (more specifically the second section concerning the presidents of the council) under the English Council of State could possibly be a violation of copyright laws. Did what I do constitute as a violation of copyright laws? If it is the I will removed it as quickly as possible.Fuelsaver (talk) 15:26, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Removal of review of book

A book's notability is determined in its own article, not in an article that links to it. The review of the book should go in the book's article. Gary King (talk) 21:37, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Louis Armstrong ref

Sorry for the slow response to your message (modem trouble). My removal of the EL was inadvertent, and I apologize; I reverted to the wrong version. I notice that another editor later removed it a second time and I'm not sure I understand their reason...maybe the fact that the article is not cited as a source is a problem, but it should be acceptable under "Further reading" as far as I can tell.
