Record of Agarest War (アガレスト戦記, Agaresuto Senki), known in Europe as Agarest: Generations of War, is a strategy role-playing game for the PlayStation 3 video game console.[3] The game is a collaboration between Idea Factory, Red Entertainment and Compile Heart.[4] An updated port of the game was released in Japan for the Xbox 360 on November 27th, 2008.[1]

Gameplay

The story progresses through various points plotted on a map. By visiting each point, the player has to battle the creatures, complete a quest, visit a town or go through a conversation to advance through the storyline and open up more points.

Fighting plays out like a strategic RPG where each character has his/her own set of moves, but by moving each character to an appropriate square, you can chain characters together and pull off combos. After each round of combat, each character will regenerate AP and accumulate SP points. When enough SP points have been accumulated, characters can unleash special attacks.

The game includes dating sim elements through its "Soul Breed" system which allows the player to create a new character by pursuing a relationship with a female character.[5]

Note: The game has no main Character with memory loss even if someone quoted that it has. Each of the 5 generations features a new main Character to follow in his father's footsteps to save the world.

Release

Record of Agarest War: Re-appearance

A port known as Record of Agarest War: Re-appearance is scheduled to come to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in Japan on November 27th, 2008. The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 version will feature additional voice acting, improved visuals, and a gallery mode. New items and a new dungeon will be available over Xbox LIVE and Playstation Network as downloadable content.

Europe

The game will be localized in Europe as Agarest: Generations of War by Ghostlight. The company plans to publish a standard retail version and a collector’s edition, both to be released on October 30th, 2009.[6] Initially, the game was set to use a cover art featuring a realistic version of the protagonist; however, negative feedback led to the publisher changing the cover art for one more faithful to the original.[7]

North America

Aksys Games plans to release the game in North America under the title Record of Agarest War. The game will be released as a download (almost 10 GBs) on the PlayStation Network, and on disc for Xbox 360. Aksys has recently stated on their forums that the release has now been pushed back to 2010. [8]

Prequel

A prequel to the game titled Agarest Senki Zero was released in Japan on June 25, 2009.[9]

Reception

Reviews for the game have been mixed, with a metacritic score of 54 currently. IGN stated, "The story is compelling and some of the characters are interesting, but the controls and graphics could easily have been done on a PS1."

Robert Townslend of Game Informer said, "Another roleplaying game where the main character has previously lost his memory and is trying to remember his past as he saves the world. This has been done about a thousand times before."
