Jason Smart is the current Resident Program Officer to the Moscow, Russia Office of the International Republican Institute.

Background

Jason Smart received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian Studies and Government & International Politics from George Mason University where he won both a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship and a David Boren Scholar.[1][2]

Academic Career

Smart served as a Research Assistant at the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies[3] and co-authored a study on the "Transnational Migrants in St. Petersburg and Washington, D.C.: A Comparative Analysis of the City's Educational Policies and Practices of Social Inclusion and Exclusion." As a result of Smart's work on the publication, Dr Andrey Rezaev worked with Smart to have him appointed as the first American Research Assistant at the Saint Petersburg State University Department of Comparative Sociology. Smart's writing have appeared in many newspapers, including: The Russian government's Russia Beyond the Headlines, Novaya Gazeta and Voice of America [4]. Smart has been interviewed as an expert on topics as diverse as American politics and Cold War history.

Smart has also published with Dr Eric Shiraev[5] on other publications and research projects. Smart has been a continuing contributor to the construction of the English version of the second most popular site in Russia[6], vkontakte.[7]

Political Involvement

Notably, Smart served for two terms with the Virginia House Appropriations Committee as a Legislative Assistant to Vince_Callahan.[8][9]. This marked a first for a George Mason University Alum to serve as the Legislative Aide to the foremost member of the House Appropriations Committee [10], Additionally, Jason Smart managed seven political races in the northern Virginia area, culminating in his position as the Field Director in Chesapeake and McLean, Virginia for the John McCain 2008 campaign[11].

In mid-2009, Smart married Adriana Rivera, the former host and producer of the Ecuadorian television program Nueva Imagen.

Boards and Other Charitable Work

Jason Smart founded the now defunct US - Russian Youth Cooperative Organization.

Smart currently serves as the Chairman of the Moscow Chapter of the Cold War Museum.[12]

Smart Co-Chairs the GMU-SPbGU Diplomacy and Education Exchange Board.
