Albert Theodore (“Ted”) Powers, (born February 11, 1953) is a noted senior lawyer, business executive and investor. Mr. Powers has over 35 years of professional experience and expertise in a vast range of corporate, commercial, finance, and tax matters, including corporate mergers, acquisitions, and leveraged buyouts; public and private finance matters; private equity matters; real estate matters including hospitality, residential, retail, commercial, and agricultural real estate investment, acquisition, development, negotiation, financing, and structuring; securities and capital markets transactions; investment funds; project finance matters; media ventures; international corporate, partnership, trust, and individual tax planning and structuring; cross-border investments and joint ventures; corporate restructurings, reorganizations, and workouts; power, oil and gas, and energy matters; leveraged leases; technology transfers; licensing and distribution arrangements; and investment transactions. Mr. Powers has particular experience and expertise in investment transactions in Greater China, where he has resided and worked for over 27 years.

Allied Pacific Group

Mr. Powers currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Allied Pacific Group, a diversified investment and advisory group which is engaged in a wide range of activities, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. The Allied Pacific Group is particularly active in the real property development and investment, financial services, investment management, energy, and media sectors.

Before becoming a full-time investment professional, Mr. Powers practiced law in New York City, San Francisco, and Hong Kong. He served as Asian Managing Partner for several of the world’s leading law firms, including Shearman & Sterling and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. Mr. Powers is admitted to practice law in the states of New York, California, and Colorado of the United States of America, the United States Supreme Court, and various other United States Federal Courts, and as a Solicitor in Hong Kong. After graduation from law school, Mr. Powers served as Law Clerk to the Honorable Robert H. McWilliams, United States Circuit Court of Appeals Judge. He has been cited by several publications as one of the world’s leading lawyers.

The Business of Baseball

Mr. Powers is the author of The Business of Baseball, published in 2003. The Business of Baseball examines the business of baseball, addressing its most significant problems and proposing solutions. It covers some of Major League Baseball’s greatest players and their effect on the game and its business. Among the many topics analyzed are the roles of franchise owners, commissioners, and players’ unions in organized baseball. The book also examines Major League ballparks and baseball fans, and considers how they are relevant to baseball as a game and a business. Mr. Powers is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research ("SABR").

Education

Mr. Powers holds a Bachelors of Arts (B.A.) degree from the University of Denver; a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree from Imperial College London; a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School; and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation degree from the New York University Law School.

Mr. Powers is the author of a number of books and professional articles, including Federal Income Taxation of Corporations (American Law Institute-American Bar Association, 1983); The Business of Baseball (McFarland & Company, 2003); Foreign Investors Challenged by New Real Estate Regulations (China Daily - Shanghai Star Business Journal, 2008); China’s Brilliance Gets New York Listing (Asian Corporate Law, 1993); Public Offering of Asian Securities (Asian Corporate Law, 1993); Use of Subchapter S Corporations for Oil and Gas Investments (Prentice-Hall, 1983); The Importance of Proper Tax Elections by New Corporations (The Practical Lawyer, 1983); and Section 16(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and Insider Trading Involving Issuer-Granted Employee Stock Options, 57 Denver Law Journal 71 (1979). Mr. Powers is a member of a number of professional associations and a frequent speaker on business and legal subjects.

Personal

Mr. Powers has resided in Hong Kong since 1983. He has been married to the former Victoria Mae Schulte, who is a Managing Director at BNP Paribas, since 1974. They have three children, Albert Theodore Powers III (born 1977), Elizabeth Victoria Powers (born 1983), and Katherine Alexandria Powers (born 1985).
