History

Valdosta State College had been serviced by Powell Library since 1940 but at 25,421 square feet the building had grown outdated and was to small to accommodate the expanding student population since the institution became co-educational in 1950.

Construction began in 1970 of a new 84,551 square feet library and the new facility, located at the heart of the main camous, was dedicated in 1972.[1]

In August of 1990, the library was renamed the Gertrude Gilmer Odum Library after Gertrude Gilmer Odum who was a major benefactor of the University and Professor Emerita of English.
