Logorama is a 17-minute animated film produced by French collective H5. The film depicts events in a stylized Los Angeles, and is told entirely through the use of more than 2,500 corporate logos. The film won the Kodak Prix at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Short Film (Animated) at the 82nd Academy Awards.[1]

Plot

Logorama's plot involves the adventures of two cops who are chasing an armed criminal through the streets of a fictionalised, stylized city. All characters and items throughout the film are depicted using real-life brand logos. The cops are portrayed as Michelin Men and the villain as Ronald McDonald.[2]

Themes

Logorama explores the extent to which logos are embedded in our daily existence. Said members of H5, "Logorama presents us with an over-marketed world built only from logos and real trademarks that are destroyed by a series of natural disasters (beginning with a hurricane, cyclone, tidal wave). Logotypes are used to describe an alarming universe (similar to the one that we are living in) with all the graphic signs that accompany us everyday in our lives. This over-organized universe is violently transformed by the cataclysm becoming fantastic and absurd. It shows the victory of the creative against the rational, where nature and human fantasy triumph."[3]

Controversy

The short film used many various corporate logos. Ironically enough, the film was taken off various video sharing sites for copyright infringement. Examples of the companies and corporations that fell victim to this infringement include Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Viacom International, Microsoft Corporation, and Apple Computer inc.
