Biography and works

Nerio was born around 1280 in Siena to a family of painters. His father as well as his siblings, Guido and Muccio, were artists. His only signed work however, is his work painting the greater altar of Saint Croce's basilica, dated around 1325, which today is scattered in several foreign museums. Studies of this work have resulted in it being reconstructed.

The artistic autonomy would have to go back to 1315, with some first juvenile paintings like the Madonna Contini Bonaccossi di Palazzo Pitti, from the forts drawn to the way of Duccio, but already from 1320 approximately its style it is defined mainly and it is arrived to the artistic maturity, characterized from one strongly spiritual of the subjects and the remarkable elegance of the figures.

The choice of the more shining colors regarding its master is not peculiar, perhaps because he was influenced by Simone Martini. Between the works of this phase they have been recognized some Madonne, one to the Lehman Collection and a church of the Servants of Montepulciano, nearest the monumental table for Croce Saint, than with its very seven buckets with the Vergine and you vary Knows to you, had to be one of the most spectacular polittici of the 1300s.

Vasari saw this shovel in its positioning originates them and attributed to Ugolino also another table, that it declared to have seen in the nail head Bards of the same church, let alone a polyptych for the church of Saint Maria Novel, today dispersed and not still identified, to part the zone centers them with the Madonna with the Child who finds in the church of the Misericordia to Saint Casciano Val di Pesa.

But the altar of Saint Croce's Basilica was not epoisodio a block, but it was the more important commission in a series of works that the Franciscans entrusted to it: today they have been characterizes at least eight polyptych to you smembra several you in museums or survivors solo as riconducibili fragments to its style and fruit of such commission like the buckets with Saint Peter and San Francisco, always in the church of the Misericordia di San Casciano Val di Pesa who probably made part of one retort in smaller tone of the great polittico of Croce Saint.
