Mount Shaiyb al-Banat or Jabal Sha'ib al-Banat or Gebel Shayeb El-Banat is situated in the Eastern Desert, 40 km from the Red Sea, between the cities of Hurghada and Safaga.

The group of peaks of the Shaiyb al-Banat is composed of four mountains:

  • Gebel Abu Dukhan (1,705 m.),
  • Gebel Qattar (or Gattar, 1,963 m.),
  • Gebel Shayeb El-Banat (2,187 m.),
  • Gebel Umm Anab (1,782 m.).

Mount Shaiyb al-Banat is the highest peak of the Red Sea Hills, and is the highest peak of the entire Egypt as well. The water springs on its slopes are mainly due to rain precipitations and underground waters. The area of the Shaiyb al-Banat is mainly inhabitated by the Ma'aza tribe, also known as Bani Attia, which is composed of about 1.000 people that live in an area of 90.000 km². These people are nomads and live with their cattle of sheeps, goats and dromedaries.
