Stiefel Laboratories is a dermatological pharmaceutical company which makes products such as Duac and Oilatum[2], based in Coral Gables, Florida[3]. They are owned by GlaxoSmithKline, and were bought by the company at a rumoured price of $2.9 billion[4]. The company was founded in 1847 by John David Stiefel, Ferdinand von Hebra and Paul Unna, who initially created medicated soaps[5].

History

The company's origins lie in the J.D. Stiefel Company which was established in 1847, in Offenbach-on-Main, Germany, by Johann David Stiefel; its first products were initially candles but the company began making medicated soaps within several years of its founding. The company's products were brought to the United States for the first time by August C. Stiefel, the grandson of J.D. Stiefel (the founder), in 1910, however during the years of the depression the company had to diversify to vacuum cleaner sales to remain profitable. In 1944 the business was resurrected, and registered in the State of New York under the name the stiefel Medicinal Soap Company, Inc., initially operating from a former creamery in Oak Hill, New York. In 1956 the company was renamed Stiefel Laboratories, Inc., and the next year the Stiefel Foundation for Dermatological Research was formed. By 1966 the company was the first to introduce benzyl peroxide for the treatment of acne with its Sulfoxyl lotion. [6]
