The USS Essex (CG-54) is the main setting of the first season of the series, with a primary mission to protect Star Republic planets. A secondary mission to explore.

In the Space Voyagers universe, humanity developed fusion reactors which in addition to solving global energy concerns went on to power space ships which opened the solar system up to exploration and exploitation of vast resources. The first extra-terrestrial colony was established on Mars on October 15, 2053. At the same time the first human exploration began to the outer solar system. The Solar Colonial Naval Command was established by an act of the global congress on October 13, 2063.

Humans developed faster-than-light space travel, using a form of propulsion referred to as "warp drive", following the development and testing of matter/anti-matter reactors on February 14, 2079. According to the storyline the first ship to break the “light barrier” was the USS New York (DD-05) on September 11. 2082. On September 1, 2093 after a bloody three year civil war over Martian independence peace brought about an end to the conflict and the establishment of the Solar Union.

With increased efficiency in matter/anti-matter intermix configurations there was a rapid growth in warp speeds. The USS Beaumont (CG-01) becomes the first ship to travel at warp two on December 2, 2097. Within 11 years the USS Constellation (CG-15) becomes the first ship to travel at warp three. This opened the way to extra-solar colonization with the establishment of the first three colonies within twenty years. The first three extra solar colonies were Alpha Centauri, Barnard’s Star, and Wolf 359. Warp four technology was under development and on November 24, 2152 the USS Defiant (CG-40) became the first warp four ship. Just 10 years later on April 16, 2162 the USS Essex (CG-54) became the first ship to achieve warp 5.

Season 1:

In the first season the stories were more slanted towards comedy with some drama thrown in.

In webisode 1 USS Essex (CG-54) has been sent to the Sirius star system to find out what happened to a survey warp probe sent to the system where it disappeared. There they are attacked by an race of humanoid cats. In webisode 2 the Captain demonstrates the strength and capability of his ship and at the same time the peaceful nature of the mission. Essex has been assigned to transport various bands from Star Republic planets to this vitally important jam fest. Tensions between the various band delegations aboard are high as the special election has been called for by the Star Senate to vote on a proposition that would require internet music download sites to pay royalties to the people who actually wrote the music. Release date; March 7, 2005.

Webisode 4: 'Thar be Pirates here' sees the crew encountering a space faring race of sentient trees who are plagued by Pirate attacks as they carry out peaceful trade and exploration. The drama in this webisode comes towards the end when a marine is wounded in action against the pirates and later dies on the operating table. Release date; April 4, 2005.

Webisode 5: 'The Rogaine Factor' sees the crew at the completion of a survey mission to the Lalande system for possible colonization. The Captain and senior staff try to take a few days to camp, relax and fish by a lake on the surface of the second planet in the system. The peace and serenity of the moment are brought to an end by people from nearby Wolf 359 as they pursue a salesman who sold them hair products. The salesman’s ship crashes on the planet brining the Captain and crews vacation to an end. Release date; May 5, 2005.
