The Dailyer Nebraskan (often referred to as the DerN), established in 2008, is a satirical newspaper produced biweekly during the fall and spring semester at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Although the Dailyer Nebraskan has a similar name and is also University-funded, it is in no way affiliated with UNL's official newspaper, the Daily Nebraskan. The current Editor-in-Chief is Jacob Zlomke.
The paper has a circulation of 10,000 making it the largest satirical newspaper produced in the state of Nebraska.
The paper contains fake news stories ranging from local and campus issues, to national and international issues. The DerN contains political, economic, social and sports stories. It also contains a serious entertainment section much like The Onion.[1]
The paper's mission is to "become the only paper with the balls to openly mock Tom Osborne".
The DerN also has a website that receives an average of 5,000 unique hits per month.
Beginnings
The paper was started by Carson Vaughan, who also served as its first Editor-in-Chief. The paper's fight and eventual victory in becoming a UNL-sanctioned newspaper created much fanfare within the Lincoln community.[2]
Controversy
As a satirical newspaper the paper has received numerous complaints. One such complaint came in an early article that contained Mohammad and Jesus fighting for scripture sales. The Muslim student organization of UNL was not happy about the article and complained.[3]
