Nelly 5.0[1] is the upcoming sixth studio album by American rapper Nelly due for release in 2010 by Derrty Entertainment and Universal Records, although a current release date is not known.[2]

Background and production

In 2009 Nelly made a public announcement in Las Vegas that he was actually recording a new album in Las Vegas.[3] In an interview later in 2009 he told DJ Semtex that he plans to release a self-titled album in the first quarter of 2010.[4] The fatal shooting in April 2010 of Nelly's cousin Michael Johnson in Missouri has presumably added further to the album's delay.[5] In 2009 two tracks were confirmed by Nelly to be in the project: "1000 Stacks" featuring The Notorious B.I.G., and "Angel Eyes" featuring Akon and produced by Play-N-Skillz.[6] On November 10, Nelly released a new song "She Got Me" produced by J. R. Rotem.[7] He said that guests on the album will be Janet Jackson, Diddy, Akon, St. Lunatics and Usher.[8] T.I. will be featuring in a track on the album, called "Dizzy", produced by Smash Factory according to a video in the studio.[9] Actor-singer Jamie Foxx will also be featured on the album.[2] Hoping to recreate the success of their 2002 Billboard chart-topping single "Dilemma," Nelly has also worked with Kelly Rowland for the sequel record to be titled "Gone"[10], produced by Jim Jonsin and written by Rico Love.[2] He has collaborated with actress Taraji P. Henson on a Jermaine Dupri-produced record.[11] Other guests making appearances on the album are Plies, Sean Paul and Young Jeezy.[6]

Title and themes

Nelly announced that the album would be titled, Nelly 5.0. The title was inspired by the his 2011 Ford Mustang, which also will be on the album artwork. Nelly's tricked-out Mustang GT came to life after the artist caught a glimpse of the vehicle while inside the walls of Ford's design studio a little more than a year ago as part of a partnership tied to the launch of the 2009 Ford Flex. Since then, Nelly has collaborated with Ford's design team and DUB's customization team to make the Mustang his own while still keeping the vehicle true to its muscle car roots.[12]

Singles

  • "Tippin' in the Club" is set to be the first official single released from the album.[13]
