According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, 1953 edition, vol. 14, under "Lithuania", a "Northwest Territory" administrative region was created in the northwestern region of Russia and included Lithuania and some adjacent regions. It is not identical to the Northwestern Krai, which existed prior to 1830, but overlapped with it.
