It has grown as a University since its inception and has established strong Scientific and Technological expansion over the years.
It started in 1984 in the form of Shanmugha College of Engineering, since renamed as the Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy. It offers undergraduate and post graduate courses in Engineering, Science, Education, Management and Arts, including some Doctoral programmes.[1] It is the first to get Deemed University status in Tamil Nadu. The institute has 8 boys' hostels and 4 girls' hostels providing so so accommodation to over 5000 boys and 3000 girls. A new hostel has been constructed for accommodating more on the campus. Also, the wi-fi range is being increased to the whole campus. The wi-fi facility has been extended to cover 7-Cube wadio (wireless radio)[3].The streaming of live matches is quite a relief to the sport fans.
The campus has a separate internet center and multimedia area and also has mini-departmental stores inside every hostel. There are also facilities for sports and body building. The academy possesses a HP RP8400 super computer for advanced computing facilities, and plans to establish a NANO park in its campus with an investment of 20 crores.
Admissions into this esteemed university is through merit (marks from HSC and AIEEE), and is very transparent. The counseling is usually done during the period of June-July months after the Plus-2 exams are over for all the students of various Boards.
Events and accolades
The university has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India. It was ranked 10th among private engineering colleges in the country by OUTLOOK 2008. Its 'School Of Chemical and Biotechnology' was ranked 1st among all private institutions in the country, and 2nd (overall) in India.[4]
In February-March 2007, the college hosted the first edition of its inter-college national-level Technical Festival Daksh and also the inter-college cultural Kuruksastra. In February-March 2008, they hosted the second edition of Daksh and Kuruksastra.
But the university has been accredited with F grade by the UGC of India. This has been a severe blow to the college. But the college management is adamantly refusing to accept this grade and is pointing fingers towards the UGC blaming them for the college failures. Moreover, the college has been removed from the list of eligible universities which can be applied through AIEEE rankings. This is a great shame to a university that boasts itself to be one of the premier institutes in India. Despite all of these happening the management is disconcerned about the student's prospects and rampantly missusing the power of law by sending letters and posting them on their websites without addressing the problem. This has become a big accolade for this university in recent times. (Reference:http://www.sastra.edu/mnews/2010/mar/hrm1.asp)
