Criticism
This section possibly contains original research. (July 2010) |
Despite being intended for children, some question whether the songs that Kidz Bop remakes are indeed suitable for children.[5]. An example of a song whose original version contains questionable material is "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga, covered on Kidz Bop 17[4]. The original lyrics contain an explicit word and reference obsession with celebrities and tobacco use.[6]. Another example is "Tik Tok" by Kesha, covered on Kidz Bop Dance Party.[7] The original lyrics include "...brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack", referring to Jack Daniel's whisky.[8] In one unique case in 2006, Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy prevented the single "Dance, Dance" from being covered on Kidz Bop 10 because of the song's blatant sexual overtones. [9]
However, Kidz Bop renditions are edited to varying degrees, especially for explicit language, drug references, and suggestive themes, while some references to violence can still be found.[10][5] As an example of Kidz Bop current editing practices, the Kidz Bop rendition of the aforementioned "Tik Tok" replaces the reference to Jack Daniels with the line "...brush my teeth and then I go and pack."[11] It also replaces "tipsy" with "silly", "I'mma fight" with "I'm alright", and excludes middle verses referencing alcohol, drunkenness, and disorderly conduct.[8] In another example a remake of the song "Let it Rock" replaced lyrics such as "Stuck his middle finger" with "raised his hand and waved it" and completely removed Lil Wayne's first solo verse, due to several curses.
In 2010, the deluxe edition of Kidz Bop 18 was advertised with the bonus track "Not Myself Tonight" originally by Christina Aguilera. The songs original lyrics reference alcohol, explicit words, sex, and contains 2 instances of the phrase "F**k you".
