Designed and built by Edison2 in Lynchburg, Virginia The Very Light Car is entered in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, a $10 million international competition to build practical 100+ mpg automobile. Having entered four vehicles across all three divisions, two of their vehicles outlasted all their competitors to become the sole finalists in the $5 million dollar Mainstream division.

The Very Light Car is designed to achieved high efficiency through extreme low weight (less than 1000 lbs) and very low aerodynamic drag (coefficient of drag <0.15). Both the mainstream class (4 passenger) and alternative class (2 passenger) entries are powered by small (250cc) one-cylinder internal combustion engines. Significant design innovations include in-wheel suspension and safety design derived from endurance auto racing.

Public availability of the Very Light Car is expected in the future. Design emphasis is on mainstream rather than exotic materials for price and environmental reasons.
