John War Eagle (June 8, 1901-1991) was a Native American actor who appeared in many films and television programs during the 1950s, 60s and 70s. He is best remembered as Red Cloud in the 1951 western Tomahawk, starring Van Heflin, and Sitting Bull in the 1958 Disney picture Tonka, the story of a young Sioux boy played by Sal Mineo on the brink of adulthood tries to tame a wild stallion to prove his courage and strength. War Eagle also appeared in Westward Ho the Wagons as the Sioux chief, Wolf Brother. John War Eagle died in February 1991 at the age of eighty nine.
