Karen Fisher is a fictional character in the BBC television drama series Waterloo Road. She will be portrayed by Amanda Burton.
Creation
It was announced in October 2009 that Burton would be joining the cast of the popular BBC drama series Waterloo Road as new Head Teacher, Karen Fisher.[1]
Of the casting, Head of Independent Drama for BBC Scotland, Anne Mensah said: "Amanda is an actress of exceptional quality and enormous popularity with the audience. We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming her to Waterloo Road. We have a fantastic cast and brilliant new stories to tell as the programme continues to go from strength to strength."[1]
Burton, who had previously starred as Dr. Sam Ryan in Silent Witness said: "I'm very excited to join Waterloo Road which is such a well-known and well-loved series. I can't wait to get started on the programme and am very much looking forward to my first day on set with the cast and crew."[2]
Development
Burton began filming for the role in the show's sixth series in November 2009 and appeared on screen from 2010.
Storylines
On her first day at Waterloo Road, Karen is extremely nervous, and decides to make big changes. This includes getting rid of the cooler, much to the annoyence of teachers such as Grantly Budgen and Tom Clarkson. Marcus Kirby refused to allow his children Jonah and Ruth to attend Waterloo Road, however after much convincing by his wife they attend. Ruth, eventually ran away from the school, as she could no longer bare Waterloo Road. Karen is horrified, and blames herself. She alongside with Christopher Mead who had just announced his plan to resign (because he'd slept with Karen's daughter Jess, he hadn't realised she was a pupil) searched together, and it was Tom who found Ruth. Ruth remains in Waterloo Road, and Karen returns home to her family. She then gets a call from her daughter Bex who is missing. In Episode 2 she finds out that her husband has cheated on her and her daughter Jess Fisher publishes a bad report about her missing daughter in the school newspaper.
