Loughglinn
Loughglynn (Irish: Loch Glinne) is a small village in County Roscommon, Ireland. It has many facilities for a small village and is steeped in history. The Village is named after the lake located to the north of the village.
Features
Loughglynn is a pleasant village; it has a school, with a Green Schools flag, a Garda station, two public houses, two little shops, one with a post office in it, a funeral home, a community centre with a play school, a catholic church (Our Lady Of Good Counsel) and a soccer pitch just beside the lake, which the village is named after. There is also an old convent in Loughglynn.
History
The convent in Loughglynn was originally Lord Dillon's and wasn't yet a convent. The style is palladian and originally had a mansard roof but, in 1896, there was a fire on the top storey which could not be repaired. The top storey was removed and the building now just has two storeys.
The lake was built for young Lord Dillon's wife, Glen. Before, that particular place was a racecourse.
The Convent
At the end of that century, Loughglynn house was sold to the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, and there started an Ateliers where teenage girls would learn Home Economics.
