Apple Remote

The Apple Remote is a remote control made for use with Apple Computer products with infared capabilities released after October 2005. The remote is largely based on the interface of the iPod shuffle and has only six buttons. The six buttons on the remote are for Menu, Play/Pause, Forward, Backward, Volume Up, and Volume Down. The remote was originally designed to interact with Front Row in the iMac ("Rev. C" aka "iSight" or newer). On January 10, 2006 the MacBook Pro with support for the Apple Remote was announced. The Front Row application allows users to browse and play music, video (DVD and downloaded files), and browse photos. The Apple Remote is also compatible with the iPod Universal Dock. The functions for the iPod Universal Dock allow for music and media control, though the remote is not able to control the menus within the iPod. It was announced by Steve Jobs on October 12, 2005. The battery is accessed by inserting a pointed object, such as a pencil, into a tiny groove at the bottom end of the remote, revealing the button cell.

Shortcuts

  • You can sleep your iMac, MacBook Pro or docked iPod by holding down the play/pause button. You can also wake your device by pressing any button.
  • The remote can be paired to only work with a certain device. Hold the remote close enough to the computer that it won't confuse a second, then press & hold the ‘Menu‘ & 'Forward' buttons. To remove the pairing, deactivate it under the OS X 'Security' System Preference pane.

iPod compatibility

  • The remote only works with the Universal Dock for iPods with dock connector.
