DVD Version
There are two versions of the film generally available on DVD. The ArtsMagic NTSC DVD has smoother video than the Tartan PAL DVD. The Tartan DVD was created by decimating from 30fps to 25fps instead of by decimating to 24fps and then speeding up to PAL, so it is jerky. The sequence where Yuji has lunch with the hit-man appears to be step-printed on both DVD's, so it is possible that something went wrong during the shooting of that sequence (Possibly it was shot on video and decimated and copied to film for editing purposes).
Some reviewers believe that the soft, color-bleeding appearance of Rainy Dog was intentional. There are references to an interview with Miike where he states that the film was processed in Taiwan and is grainier as a result... The video problems with the DVD's are not due to the grain (which is evident, but lends "grit" to the picture, which was obviously shot on fast stock in less than ideal lighting conditions).
I'm not dure how much of this is " verifiable", or even whether it belongs in the article.
