Adam de Pencier

The Most Rev. Adam de Pencier ,[1]OBE,[2] DD was the third Bishop of New Westminster and second Metropolitan of British Columbia.[3] Born in 1866, he was the great-great grandson of Charles I, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel through his great-grandfather Christian Theodore von Pincier.[4] The von Pincier family, which received its peerage from King Carl XII in 1698 in Stockholm, came to Canada in the 18th century.

Educated at Trinity College in Toronto and ordained in 1890, de Pencier held incumbencies at St Matthew’s, Brandon and St Paul’s, Vancouver.[5] He was appointed Bishop of New Westminster in 1910[6] and later Archbishop in British Columbia. Prior to retiring in 1940, he was award the Order of the British Empire by King George V.[7]
