Mike McCoy (American football coach)
Mike McCoy (born April 1, 1972) is an American football coach and former quarterback. He is the currently the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League.
Carolina Panthers
As a fresh coach the young Mike McCoy already received one of the biggest tests in his coaching career. McCoy had done something that had only been done once before. McCoy coached three different starting quarterbacks (Vinny Testaverde, Matt Moore, and Jake Delhomme) to at least one win, adding an early compliment to his resume.
In McCoy's 9th season with the Carolina Panthers McCoy could see early development in his three young quarterbacks. During his time McCoy consistently worked with Jake Delhomme, playing a huge role in how Jake Delhomme would play his career.
One way of proving how easy it is for McCoy to develop a quarterback and fast, is he quickly moved quarterback Brett Basanez from practice squad to an active roster.
While many offensive coordinators and head coaches came through the Panthers staff, McCoy kept much of the information and learned a lot through the men that passed the halls so quickly. On gameday McCoy was the voice of the quarterbacks. When a play was called Delhomme would hear McCoy's voice.
A very quick and well learner, the visual of McCoy's labor can be seen in Jake Delhomme's talent. (Delhomme was undrafted in 1997 NFL Draft) most importantly the Carolina Panthers rank 9th in most wins since the beginning of the 2002 NFL Season.
In his first 6 seasons with the Panthers, McCoy had many jobs, such as offensive assistant, quarterbacks coach, and wide receivers coach.
While McCoy was the wide receivers coach he did a good job with an injury prone corps. During this season he also helped veteran Issac Byrd to his best NFL season in his career. And also training the then rookie Steve Smith for the future.
With the arrival of new head coach John Fox in 2002 McCoy saw himself go back to the job of offensive assistant.
After the 2008 NFL Season, the Denver Broncos hired Mike McCoy.[1]
Denver Broncos
Mike McCoy was brought to the Denver Broncos with the Broncos in a situation with a new coach, needing a new offensive and defensive coordinator. Mike McCoy was hired to be the new offensive coordinator and quarterback coach of the Broncos for the 2009 season. The new staff in Denver featured two other young coaches, new head coach and former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and new defensive coordinator and former San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan. Personal
A native of Novato, California, McCoy and his wife Kellie have two kids, a daughter and a son, Olivia and Luke, respectively; they reside in Denver. [1]
