Float, is a public artwork by caucasian artist Peter Flanary, located on the UWM Sandburg Hall, which is near Milwaukee, Wisconsin[disambiguation needed], USA.
Nearly 1000 Students everyday walk past this Peter Flanary's piece titled "Float." The sculpture is nestled into a deep ravine and takes advantage of the lay of the land. Peter has said that before creating any sculpture "I go to the desired location where the sculpture will be built and just sketch." (Phone interview with Peter Flanary December 4th 2pm). "Float" plays with the weight of materials and combines a bronze structure of a canoe with the heavy granite stone. The piece is about 15 feet high and barely raises up the sidewalk to Sandburg Halls.
"Float" was purchased through $25,000 that was set aside during the building of Sandburg for artwork. While talking to Peter it was discovered that the piece was originally supposed to feature a cart with an anvil on top with a star reigning over. The architect of Sandburg thought that this piece demonstrated a communist ideal and forced Peter to come up with something else.
"Float" is currently property of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and all applicable students.
Peter Flanary created this piece entitled "Float" in his studio located in Mineral Point Wisconsin. He is a part time lecturer at UW Wisconsin. Flanary loves working with granite because it is the total Wisconsin medium.
