Kotwal Dhan Singh Gurjar was one of the most prominent freedom fighters of 1857 revolt.He was the first freedom fighter of 1857 revolt.It's recorded in Meerut Gazetteers.

Early life

He was born in village Panchali in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

Revolt of 1857 in Meerut

The freedom movement which started in 1822 from kunja Bahadurpur, came to shape in 1857.In movement of 1857 freedom fighters had support of soldiers too.Kotwal Dhan Singh Gurjar was the leader of this initial battle of 1857.Dhan Singh Gurjar was the Kotwal of Meerut in 1857.

Lisadhi gate which was the main gate of Gurjar settlement, was opened by Dhan Singh Gurjar on 10th may, 1857.Thereafter people took weapons and marched to kill the Britishers.Important places of Meerut were captured.After completing the task at Meerut, the revolutionaries started to march towards delhi with the slogans "Dilli Chalo".[1][2]

In memory of this martyr of 1857 movement, the newly built campus community centre of Meerut University is named after him.[3]
