"The Freshmen"
Song

"The Freshmen" is a song by The Verve Pipe that was first featured, in acoustic style, on their 1992 album I've Suffered a Head Injury (although not as a single, and the album was later recut as an EP without the song) and later re-recorded and released as a featured single on their 1996 album Villains. It was released as the album's third single on March 31, 1997.[1] The song peaked at #5 in the United States.

Song meaning

According to the Verve Pipes' FAQ, guitarist and lead singer Brian Vander Ark wrote the song in 1991 about the guilt he felt from his ex-girlfriend committing suicide. [2]

According to an external interview site, The girl in the song is based on Vander Ark's girlfriend who really had an abortion. However, she didn't actually commit suicide like in the song, which Vander Ark said was poetic license.[3][4]
