The European School in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, is one of 3 official European Schools in Germany and is the 5th of 14 European Schools established since 1953 around Europe and currently has around 1000 students on role in the Kindergarten, Primary School and Secondary School (see External links).

History

The school was founded in 1962 for the children of the members of the European Commission (Category I), after the foundation of the Institute for Transuranium of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre at Karlsruhe. Since then, the school has on role children from many other European or families from overseas who live and/or work in the area of Karlsruhe (Category II & III). The school provides mother-tongue education in all european languages and different language sections - from Kindergarten (age 4) up to European Baccalaureate level (age 18) for pupils from a wide variety of European and other backgrounds. The first European Baccalaureate in Karlsruhe was held in July 1968.

The school offers 3 languages sections (English, French, German) with the last Dutch and Italian sections graduating in 2011. With a wide choice of mother-tongues (all European languages); Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, German, Greek, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish.
