Julie Alexandra Mayer is a fictional character on the ABC television series Desperate Housewives. The character is played by actress Andrea Bowen. She is the daughter of Karl Mayer and Susan Delfino and first appeared in the pilot episode of the series in 2004. Julie is characterised as possessing the anthithesis of her mother's unstable and insecure personality, consistently acting as a grounding force for Susan. However, in the 6th season, Julie's personality has changed quite a bit, with her saying she was no longer the "perfect" daughter.

Season 1

Julie usually helps Susan deal with problems regarding Susan's love life. She also helps to care for her mother after her divorce. She is briefly romantically involved with Zach Young, but she soon comes to find him disturbing, breaking up with him. Zach continued to linger around Julie, trying desperately to win her back, but his plans backfired when Susan refused to let them see each other after Zach throws a table in anger when Susan says they should "cool it, for a while". She is intelligent and gets good grades at school, has a good singing voice, and is very helpful to other children of the Wisteria Lane. She is a good friend to Danielle Van de Kamp. The idea of her mother and father remarrying is not a good thing to her, noting "I can't go through another divorce". For Susan, she is always there when needed. Julie often acts as a serious counterpoint to her mother's unusual behavior.

Season 2

During the second season, Julie expressed concern over Susan's re-marriage to Karl, but agreed to it because she wanted Susan to have her surgery to remove her wandering spleen. As an act of kindness towards Zach and Mike, she invited Zach bowling with them, to try and help Mike and Zach bond. Their friendship was ruined when Paul Young forbade Zach to ever speak to them again. She also catches Susan in bed with her dad Karl, and she is forced to sleep in a small van with Susan when their house is burned down by Edie Britt. Karl buys them a new house, but Susan refuses, eventually moving back to their house in season 3.

Season 3

In the beginning of the third season, Julie meets Edie's nephew, Austin McCann, whom she likes but doesn't want to admit it. Edie soon tells Julie that Austin is bad news and that she shouldn't get attached. Julie assures her that she is just friends with Austin and Edie replies with, "That's what all the good girls say just before they turn into bad girls. Trust me, I know".

Julie is involved in a hostage situation – a supermarket held up by Carolyn Bigsby. She and Susan were fighting before she got held hostage. Austin and Julie form a bond when they are faced with a life and death situation: she is present when Carolyn kills Nora Huntington and Austin then fights against Carolyn, and another hostage picks up a gun and shoots Carolyn in the head, killing her. Julie and the other hostages leave the super market and Susan is shocked to see Julie hug Austin. Susan has recently banned Julie from seeing Austin but Julie told her to forget it because she was going to keep seeing him anyway. Susan was also angry at Edie, for not stopping the relationship, until she discovers that letting Julie and Austin carry on was her sustained revenge on her over the events of season 2.

In episode 3.11, "No Fits, No Fights, No Feuds", Julie decides to give up her virginity to Austin after a talk with Andrew made her think that if she didn't have sex with Austin, he would leave her. Shortly afterwards it is revealed that Austin is cheating on Julie with Danielle, who's supposed to be Julie's friend. As Susan finds out that Edie gave Julie birth control, she and Edie Britt walk in on Danielle and Austin in a compromising position. Susan tells Julie about it, and Julie is then seen crying on her mom's shoulder. They later reconcile only to have Austin leave town as he impregnated Danielle, which Julie doesn't know. In the episode "My Husband, the Pig", Austin writes his ex-girlfriend Julie a heartfelt letter and she agrees to take him back, not knowing about Danielle’s pregnancy. Unfortunately after Austin finds out Danielle is pregnant, Orson tells him to leave town. At first he resists but Andrew Van de Kamp convinces him by asking him if he can be the kind of guy Julie needs him to be. Obviously he thinks he isn't good enough for her, and Austin tells Julie he has to leave for a while for “a family thing”.

In the season three finale, Julie welcomes back Bree Hodge and Orson Hodge when they arrive back from their honeymoon. She questions them about Danielle's whereabouts and why she hasn't responded to any of her emails or phone messages. Bree tells Julie that Danielle came across a boarding school which she loved and she wanted to stay there for a year. Bree also assures Julie that she will get Danielle to send her an email in the morning, all of which is a cover up, since Danielle is pregnant with Austin's child. Bree is the one who sends Julie the e-mail. Julie is the only guest at Susan's and Mike's wedding later in the episode and watches as the Vicar marries them.

Season 4

In the fourth Season premiere Julie is reunited with her childhood best friend, Dylan Mayfair, when Dylan and her family return to the street after twelve years of being absent. However Dylan does not remember Julie or ever living on Wisteria Lane. Julie asks her what's her earliest memory and she tells Julie that she has dreams about being in a room as a young child and a man trying to grab her. Julie asks her if she's ever thought about speaking to someone about it like a counsellor; however Dylan tells her that's what a babysitter once had told her but Katherine Mayfair, her mother, got mad and fired the babysitter. The next morning, Julie tells Susan that Dylan is not the same girl as she was years ago when they were best friends. It turns out that Julie's right, because the real Dylan had been crushed to death by a wardrobe and buried just before Katherine Mayfair left Fairview.

In the second episode of Season 4 "Smiles of a Summer Night" Julie asks Susan if she can go to a party. Mike tells her he'd rather she didn't go as he's seen some crazy parties at the house where Julie was going. Even though Susan had previously given Julie permission to go to the party, she sides with Mike and Julie is forbidden to go. However, without telling Mike, Susan changes her mind again and, telling Julie she just wanted Mike to feel as if he were part of the decision making process, she allows Julie to attend the party. Later that night Mike tells Susan he drove past the house earlier on and saw things like girls running around topless, people staggering around drunk and music blaring. Susan says she needs to run to the store and she goes to the party to pick up Julie; however some boys at the party mistake her for a stripper because of her 'implants', but she tells them she is pregnant and takes Julie and Dylan, who was with her, home. Mike later finds out and tells Susan that he respects her decisions on how to raise Julie how she wants, since Julie is her child and not Mike's.

In the episode "The Game" Julie and Dylan are staying at Dylan's house while everyone goes to Susan's for a small games party and Julie asks Dylan if Katherine told her any more about her father and Dylan just says she flipped out and wouldn't tell her anything, and tells Julie that there is stuff from her childhood in an old room in the house but it's locked. Julie soon unlocks the door and the two look through Dylan's old stuff. Katherine returns home, however, and tells Julie to go home. When she does, Dylan apologizes to her mother and Katherine forbids her to ever see Julie again.

Julie then began dating a questionable boy named Derek, who has many piercings, which freaked Susan out, so she tried to fix her up with a young man who had showed up at the house looking for Mike. However, Susan quickly broke the relationship up when she found out that the young man was in fact, Mike's drug dealer.

In the episode "Free" Julie was officially admitted into Princeton University and one of the professors at Princeton was so impressed by her senior thesis that she was offered a summer internship. She left to attend college.

Season 5

She is in the 8th episode "City on Fire" which premiered on Sunday, November 16, 2008.

In that episode she comes home with her boyfriend from college, and Susan is shocked to find out that the boy is actually Julie's college professor, a 40-year-old man who has been married 3 times. He also shows Susan an engagement ring he has in his pocket. When it comes time to pop the question, Susan meddles in and Julie declares that she does not want to get married, ever, because of all the bad luck Susan has had with marriage. Susan explains to Julie how much she believes in marriage and the two share a hug.

Season 6

Julie returns to Wisteria Lane in season 6. She helps her mother and Mike plan their wedding. Danny Bolen then asks her to tutor him in math. It is later proven that he isn't even enrolled in school yet. Later Danny asks Julie out, and Karen witnesses a fight between the two. Julie is Susan's maid of honor as she re-marries Mike. Later, while taking out the recycling, she is strangled from behind by a masked assailant and left for dead. Her neighbors Karen and Roy find her, with Karen thinking Danny was responsible. Julie might be pregnant, which she told Lynette, who later revealed it to Susan at the hospital. The doctors then revealed that Julie was not pregnant. There is a possibility that Julie has a romantic history with Nick Bolen. Julie was in medical school, to become a surgeon. However, 6 months before she was put into her coma, she had quit. While she was deciding what to do with her life, she got a job as a waitress. She never told Susan this. She found out after Andrew accidentally told her. It is revealed that Julie was dating a married man while away. It is then hinted that Nick Bolen was the married man when he secretly visits her in the hospital under the alias Dominick. Wisteria Lane throws Julie a "Welcome Home" party. Nick tries to talk to Julie, but she tells him that she doesn't want anything to do with him anymore. Danny witnesses his father trying to talk to Julie and isn't impressed with him. Angie knew about the affair for weeks and when Julie tries to make small talk with her, she tells her not to, and to "avert her eyes and blush." She shouldn't be talking to the wife of the guy she "banged." Danny tries to date Julie but since she was in a relationship with his father, she declines. After being rejected by Julie, Danny tries to kill himself, but is unsuccessful.

Neither Julie, nor the Delfinos were at the Christmas party when the plane crash took place, presumably because Mike was wrongly arrested for Katherine's "attempted murder", her father, Karl, however, died in the crash. Karl leaves Julie money after he dies, it is unclear who will watch over her other half-brother, Evan. She then tells Danny Bolen that she will be leaving to visit her cousins "back East" until they catch the Fairview Strangler. However, she does agree to accompany him to a comedy show featuring their pal, Eddie. It is obvious Danny's plans with her are romantic. Julie then receives a plea from Ana begging her to help her win over Danny. Julie decides to fix them up instead of pursuing a relationship with him herself. After Danny and Ana make a connection, Susan reveals that Julie has truly gone to be with her cousins and they allow a reformed stripper to move into her room. In the episode "Epiphany", it reveals that Eddie was the one who strangled Julie but, his intended target was her mother, Susan. Eddie had fallen in love with Susan after she showed him great kindness and took an interest in his art. When he learned she was re-marrying Mike, he planned to kill her. He strangled Julie by mistake, thinking she was Susan from behind. After realizing what he had done, he showed great remorse and even visited Julie in the hospital, remarking that whoever attacked her was merely a pathetic coward, referring to himself. Then her mother, half-brother and stepfather are forced to leave their home after enduring tough financial times, making Susan angry. Their home is then rented by Paul Young, the adoptive father of Zach Young, Julie's step-brother and ex-boyfriend.

Season 7

Following the massive riot caused by Paul Young's plan to open a halfway house on Wisteria Lane, Susan becomes a victim of a stampede but manages to survive and needs kidney dialysis every 48 hours. Julie finally makes her first appearance in season 7 in the episode "Where Do I Belong" where she visits her mom in the hospital. She offers Susan her kidney but Susan protests against this, saying that she doesn't want her daughter to "live the rest of her life with one kidney". Julie then secretly goes for a blood test but apparently, Julie's not a match and after telling an initially shocked Susan the news, Susan becomes proud of Julie for even trying to.
