Orchestra 2001

Orchestra 2001 is an American orchestra based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is dedicated to the performance of contemporary classical music, and has presented 70 world premieres, 95 Philadelphia-area premieres, and 200 works by 115 American composers, of which more than 125 works were by 53 different Philadelphia-area composers. [1]

History

The orchestra was established in 1988 by James Freeman, the orchestra's artistic director and conductor and is in residence at Swarthmore College. The ensemble has had a particularly strong connection with composer George Crumb and in recent years has had the privilege of premiering many of his works including his largest cycle of works to date, his American Songbooks for voice, percussion quartet and piano.[2][3] Orchestra 2001 has also had a large impact upon the ongoing "Complete George Crumb" series of Bridge Records, having recorded works for Volumes 7, 10, 13, and 15;[4] "Winds of Destiny" from Bridge Records Volume 13 having been nominated for "Best Classical Contemporary Composition" for the 52nd Annual Grammy awards based upon this recording.[5][6]

Notable Premieres

With the premiere of "American Songbook, No. 1" in the winter of 2003[7], Orchestra 2001 began premiering George Crumb's ambitious settings of folk songs. The group has premiered all six sets from the series and has also recorded through No. 5 with Bridge Records. [8][9][10]
