The broader autism phenotype (BAP) is a set of subclinical features often present in families of those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)[1]. The features, when fully present, are characteristic traits of the autism spectrum. They most commonly include social and communication deficits, restricted or repetitive interests and behaviors. One study has proposed six candidate traits of the BAP: face processing (including eye contact and expression), social affiliation or sensitivity to social reward, motor imitation ability, memory, executive function, and language ability (especially phonological processing)[2]. Traits of the BAP are usually present from childhood[3] in subclinical form, insufficient for a pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) diagnosis.
