Strategy

[edit]

This page is designed to maximize performances during competitive darts. It also gives a brief description of many different ways to play darts. Different strategies are used when playing different forms of darts. These strategies are intended to create a greater amount of success during competition.

Fives

[edit]

Fives requires the score be divisible by five, making values 5, 10, 15, and 20 your prime targets. The bull's-eye and double bull are worth 25 and 50 points respectively, making them harder to achieve. It is important to avoid bringing your score to 49 or 50. All three darts must score with 5 or 10 points. This makes it incredibly easy to bust once your score reaches an excess of five or ten points. Strategically it is challenging to score only ten points with the three darts (4, 4, 2 for example). It is much more difficult to score only 5 points (2, 2, 1 for example).[1]

American Darts

[edit]

It is best to score a minimum of 60 points per round. Find your hot number and continue to aim for it. Smaller numbers are not to be ignored. American Darts is a numbers game. It is best to try and score as many points as possible regardless of the value.[2] Try to close numbers that your opponent has closed to keep them from scoring more points.

Darts cricket

[edit]

The best strategy is to close the highest numbers first in descending order. The scoreboard is designed this way for this very reason. If points are scored, the player closer to the number has the advantage. Your opponent must score two 19's to score 38, if you closed the 20 by scoring 20 points in your first round.

Darts is considered a "polite sport" in which shooting too many points is frowned upon. Players do not typically "point monger" each other. They do not try to get the most points that they possibly can. It is acceptable to maintain a 25 to 50 point lead, but more aggresive play is considered improper. A weaker player can beat a stronger player by forcing their opponent to score extra bulls-eyes.[3]

Starting the game gives a player a great advantage over their opponent. In order to start the match you must win the "cork". It is best to practice with fellow players in order to gain the advantage of shooting.[4]

Dartball/Baseball

[edit]

Like most games where scoring is important, the best strategy is to shoot for the triple ring. A triple ring of 20 is the highest possible score available on a dart board. Similar to baseball, the most runs will win you the game.[5]

Shanghai

[edit]

It is best to aim for triples. Triples have the greatest value. In order to score a Shanghai, a triple is needed. If the first dart scored is a double or triple, it is best to seek a Shanghai.[6]

Killer

[edit]

In order to win, one must gain "killer" status as quickly as possible. It is also important to recognize your opponents score. It is best to eliminate killers before eliminating those seeking to become one.[7]
