The oldest evidence of human life in Pakistan was found in the Soan River valley of Pothar (Pothohar) region of Punjab. Along the River Soan in Rawalpindi Division hundreds of men made tools can be found. These tools dated 500,000 to 300,000 years ago.
On Adiyala and Khasala about 16 km from Rawalpindi terrace on the bend of the river hundreds of edged pebble tools were discovered. At Chauntra hand axe and cleaver were found. Due to the peculiarity of the tools to the valley archaeologist named this human activity the Soan Culture.
No men skeleton of this antiquity has been found yet. In Soan River Gorge many fossil bearing rocks are exposed on the surface. The 14 million years old fossils of gazelle, rhinoceros, crocodile, giraffe and rodent have been found here. Some of these fossils are in display at Natural History Museum of Islamabad.
