Cut the Rope is a physics-based puzzle video game for iOS. It was developed in 2010 by Russian developers ZeptoLab and is published by Chillingo.[3] It uses the Crystal social networking service. Currently, it is available only on the iOS operating system, including the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, with a version for Android coming soon.
The object of each of the game's numerous levels is to manoeuver a piece of candy into the mouth of a cartoon monster, called Om Nom, and also to pick up up to three stars per level by touching them with the candy. The candy hangs by one or several ropes which the player can cut with a swipe of their finger, and can also be manipulated through other objects such as bellows.[4] Other objectives include keeping the candy within the box and/or avoiding spikes and electricity.
When released on 5 October 2010, "Cut the Rope" was available for the iPhone version and a HD version for the iPad.[4] A free trial version was also available for each device. Nine days after its release, the game had been purchased one million times and risen to the top of the App Store's charts. According to Chillingo, this made it the fastest-selling iOS game to reach that number of sales.[3] As of December 2010, it had been purchased three million times.[5]
In October 2010, not long after its release, it was revealed that an Android version of the game was planned, but no specific release date was given.[6]
In December 2010, another, holiday-themed free version of the game with additional levels, Cut The Rope: Holiday Gift, was published.[5]
In February 2011, Cut The Rope received an update including a new level pack called the "Valentines Box" including new, Valentine-themed levels.
In March 2011, ZeptoLab posted a YouTube video with sneak peek of Cut the Rope for Android. The description says, the release date will be announced later.[7]
In April 2011, Chillingo posted another YouTube video with a preview of the next update to Cut The Rope with level pack number 7, the "Magic Box", released later in the month.
In June 2011, Cut the Rope won a prestige Apple Design Award for the iPhone platform at WWDC 2011.[8]
Level Packs
Cut The Rope uses a system like many other game apps using different level packs, allowing updates including new levels. Cut The Rope currently has seven level packs, called "Boxes", with more planned. There is also the Holiday Gift box, in the separate Cut The Rope game, entitled Cut The Rope: Holiday Gift, released December 2010. The original version of the game, v1.0, included the first four, the v1.1 update in November added the "Cosmic Box", the v1.2 update in February added the "Valentines Box", and the v1.3 update added "Magic Box".
