Marianne is an upcoming 2011 Swedish horror film, directed by Filip Tegstedt, that will be premiering at the 2011 Fantasia International Film Festival [1]

Set in the north of Sweden, in the town of Östersund, in the Jämtland region, this film focuses on the mental state of Krister, a man who is left to raise a newborn baby whilst coping with a teenage daughter who blames him for the recent death of his wife. In the midst of his psychological turmoil, Krister suffers from terrible nightmares and becomes convinced that he may be haunted by a Mare.[2]

Premise

Marianne explores Swedish folklore surrounding the concept of the Mare, which is related to the contemporary medical phenomenon of sleep paralysis.

Sleep paralysis is a condition where patients report waking up paralyzed, unable to move, whilst feeling a presence in the room like someone is watching them. See also Hypnagogia. The paralysis often comes with the sense of a heavy weight on their chest that makes it difficult to breathe. In Scandinavian and Finnish folklore, this condition is believed to be caused by a Mare that sits on the chest of victims.[3]

In past times, it was also common to drive an axe into the wall above the door of the stables and barns, as it was thought the Mare would otherwise ride the horses and cattle during the night and drive them mad.
