Hari S Kartha was born in Trivandrum,Kerala, to GS Kartha, associate editor of Keralakaumudi. , the former Indian Test cricketer Dilip Sardesai, and a Maharashtrian mother, Nandini Sardesai, an activist in Mumbai and former head of the Department of Sociology at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.

THE FINANCIAL EXPRESS: 1980 May to 1988 June as Senior Staff Correspondent. 1995 Jan to 2002 April as Chief of Bureau and News Coordinator for Kerala. The job involved motivating, guiding and co-coordinating reporters under the Kochi edition.

THE ECONOMIC TIMES: The first ET staffer in Kerala. 1988 July to 1994 Dec as Special Correspondent. The job also involved planning and executing special supplements besides news coverage.

THE GULF NEWS: 1984 to 1995 as stringer. Covered major developments in business, politics and culture in South India including General Elections and the impact of the Kuwait War
