Mark Duggan (15 September 1981 – 5 August 2011) was a taxi driver and alleged drug dealer shot dead by police in August 2011. His shooting was mentioned as a trigger factor in the 2011 London riots. [1] The police claim that he was armed and shot at the police before being shot back at by the policemen.[2] Friends and relatives of Duggan stated that he was unarmed.[1] The media widely reported that a bullet was found embedded in a police radio, implying Duggan fired on the police.[3] An article in The Guardian reported that preliminary ballistics tests on the bullet recovered from the police radio suggested that the bullet was consistent with bullets used by the police themselves.[3]
The police officers who killed him were part of Operation Trident, a London Metropolitan police unit which deals with black gun crime.[4] Duggan was of African ethnicity and may have been a victim of racial profiling.
Duggan attended St David's and St Katherine's, now Greig City Academy, in Hornsey. He is survived by his fiancée Semone Wilson with whom he has three children,[4] and a fourth child from another relationship.[1]
